Garden Update

by Charlotte on August 8, 2010

It’s been a while since I posted a garden update. A lot of the melons and peppers did not survive the transplant so we need to re-think our seed starting strategy for next season. Fortunately, all our tomato plants are thriving. We did not have to buy any tomato plants this year. They were all started from seed. Other success stories include cilantro, basil, bok choy (this is questionable as it tasted so “green”, I’m not sure if I like that), quinoa, sugar star peas, rosemary, and many other herbs.

The berries did well for the first time this year. We are still harvesting strawberries and a few blueberries. Raspberries had two good weeks then they were gone. It is only their second year so next year should be better.

We were also able purchase several pepper plants that are now producing well.

How is your garden doing this year?

It’s also been a very cold summer in the PNW so that has affected the crops quite a bit. Normally we would’ve had ripe tomatoes on the vine a month ago, but we are still waiting for them in August. If it does warm up all of the blossoms on our 6′ tomato plants should produce a good late season bumper crop.

Doubt that I’ll get anything here outside of Seattle. Don’t even start from seed but buy starter plants. Am on my 2nd set and not all of them look like they’re going to make it. Definitely miss those HOTlanta summers cause I could grow just about anything!
