Hong Kong Style Chow Mein

by Charlotte on June 25, 2010

Lately, I have grown very fond of seafood chow mein, Hong Kong style. The noodles on this dish are pan-fried as opposed to the more common version of stir-fried. To start the weekend off, I made my own version using a recipe from Taste Hong Kong. It was good for the first attempt. However, I got lazy and used a regular pan instead of my “magic” wok. This resulted in a lack of wok hay aroma. I also used less cornstarch which made the sauce watery.  The noodles on the other hand, came out very good. I got the refrigerated chow mein noodles from Can Tho, my favorite neighborhood Asian store. If you’d rather enjoy it in a restaurant, Chinatown and Wong’s King make some of the best in town.

Strawberry Season

by Charlotte on June 17, 2010

We finally got some strawberries from our garden on the third season! I guess it takes a couple of years.

I made some strawberry jam using the recipe from Sure Jell. My family was happy to take a few jars home with them.

Hwy 101

by Charlotte on June 13, 2010

I am currently in Victoria, BC with my parents and brother Francis having a blast! There are so many great photo opportunities here so I think my interest in photography has been revived. In the meantime, here’s a picture I took along Hwy 101.

Florence

by Charlotte on June 3, 2010

Florence, OR was a lot like Newport, OR but smaller. It is less touristy and more charming in my opinion. One thing that I was impressed with was the food culture. It is hard to find good food on the Oregon Coast but Florence had some pretty good restaurants. I highly recommend breakfast or lunch at the Nature’s Corner Cafe. For dinner, head to Waterfront Depot or their sister restaurant across the street that serves trattoria style meals. I tend to judge places by the food culture and this place wins a star from me.

The beach in Florence was nice and calm.

The bridge across the Siuslaw River.

Our hotel Old Town Inn although basic, was walking distance to old town.

Dog-friendly dockside dining.

The Honeyman State Park is one of the coolest parks I have seen. The sandy beach is good for making sand castles as well as sand boarding.

My first attempt at sand boarding. It was fun!

Mulder tried to pull Marcel downhill but got tired after about ten steps.

Florence is now one of my favorite places on the Oregon Coast. Have you been there?
